Due to the age of this camera, it won't be able to handle the more high capacity sd cards (SDHC). As such, you probably won't be able to go over 1GB, perhaps 2GB. (especially if there's a firmware update for it).

But allow me to make an pitch for using several cards, rather than one large one. Reason being, insurance. Any memory card can fail or become corrupted. And when you're on vacation the last thing you want is to lose the opportunity to take pictures until you can recover that media card with a software utility. If your card goes bad, swapping another one for it at that moment is of advantage so you can keep taking pics. Then, later when you're in front of your PC, you can use a utility like "F-Recovery" to get back your pictures and recover your card.

No need to lose the moment because you relied on one card one when several can solve that problem. At the very least, you want to get more than one of whatever size you settle on.

One last thing. Cards have different speeds. The faster a card is, the quicker it'll save the photo and cycle to be ready for another shot. In the end, your camera is only going to be as fast as it's slowest link in the chain. So check for speed when you purchase a card.

2 gb, says so in the manual. However, i agree with the above poster. Smaller cards minimize your losses, unless you're putting them on the computer daily. I believe the highest speed it will handle is 45.

The above answers need to be corrected, or at least clarified:

The Canon S2 IS can *read* SD cards larger than 2GB. That is, cards which have been pre-formatted. However, you must be careful to not run the S2's low-level *format* function with these larger cards. Doing so will cause potentially permanent corruption on the card.

The S2 IS can read FAT32 partitions of any size, but to maintain compatibility with Win 95 and other, older operating systems, it creates only FAT16 partitions (which are limited to 2GB).

So use a separate card reader or other device to format your cards if they're larger than 2GB, and when you need to clear the memory, use the S2's "Erase All" function, not its format function.

One last note: the S2 IS does NOT accept SDHC cards, and most SD cards of 4GB and larger are SDHC.
