I have an Canon Powershot S2 IS and I have a two part question on settings.

How do I reset saved settings? I had saved some settings for my son's basketball games. Now when I try to save settings for his football games, it automatically converts back to the basketball settings every time the camera shuts down or off. So I go to take pictures during football, and everything is back to my basket ball settings. By the time I try to reset everything; I've already missed the plays, and I spend the defense time of the game resetting for the offense. This happens every time! Argg.
Part two, has anyone using the S2 IS found the best settings for football games or other outdoor action shots? I haven't mastered that yet.

You'll have to turn the dial to Programmable mode indicated by a P, and change the settings there, which should apply to the manual mode. For the best setting, try to turn the ISO down as far as you can without getting a bad picture, turn the EV up accordingly to get a brighter picture, also prezoom a lot, and pan with the action.

Well, the first thing you can do is reset your camera to factory default settings. That'll at least get you out of the basketball settings. Then you simply do what you did before, only customized for football. As Aditya recommended, set it to program and then adjust the settings accordingly. You're going to want your ISO to be at least 400, otherwise you won't get a shutter speed slow enough and the aperture settings wide open enough to balance the lighting conditions while preventing camera shake. Also, you may want to use the exposure compensation. Luckily, night football games tend to be well lit, so you shouldn't have that much trouble there. But I'd also consider getting a monopod for additional support against camera shake.

Also, you can avoid alot of shutter lag by doing the following:

1. Prefocus. Hold down the shutter half way to get a prefocus of the image you're shooting. When it changes, prefocus again. This will speed up your camera's performance during picture taking since it won't have to autofocus before it shoots the shot.

2. Use faster SD cards. Yes, there are faster cards and it does make a difference in writing the image file to the card. This is especially key if you're taking multiple or burst images.

3. Fresher batteries. Use alkalines at least. But I recommend using high energy batteries designed for digital photography. Varta is a good brand. They are usually sold in camera shops, are long lasting (because they are sold in small quantities) put out alot of energy.

4. Pan with the action. You can create some pretty cool shots by panning with your shot, focusing on your subject. This will create the effect of your subject in sharp contrast to the blurry background.

6. Stick with 100-400 ISO. Going higher will cause more noise/grain in your shots, particularly in darker settings.

Doing these, particularly prefocusing and panning with the action will cut your shutter lag by as much as 80%.

Your camera may be one of a host of cameras that suffered from a faulty CCD chip. Check out this from Canon regarding it.

Affected products:

- Camcorders: ZR60, ZR65 MC, ZR70 MC, ZR80, ZR85, ZR90, ELURA 40 MC, ELURA 50
- Digital Cameras A60, A70, A75, A300, A310, S230, SD100, SD110, A40(*), A80(*), A85(*), A95(*), S1 IS(*), S60(*), S200(*), S330(*), S400(*), S410(*), S500(*)

Malfunction:
It has been confirmed that the connecting parts of the internal wiring of the CCD used in affected products may become disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. If this occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image. This malfunction can be confirmed on the LCD monitor screen during shooting. The same malfunction also appears on the recorded image.

Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

So the good news is that Canon will fix it for FREE:
