Though Canon doesn't recommend using your camera as a webcam, a workaround may be possible using the Audio/Video Out. However, if you're a mac user, there's no better webcam than the iSight.

Unfortunately, you are not able to use the Canon S3 IS as a web-camera. There are many viable options out there for webcams under $30 though.

I know this is an older question, but I just purchased the S3 a couple of weeks ago and have been playing around with it trying to get it to be a webcam as well. One of the ways would be to install a video capture card (I rec. a PCI type card rather than the USB). Depending on the card mfg. you can connect through S-Video or RCA jacks (supplied w/camera) and set the camera to movie. Do not press the start, just keep it in pause mode.
It's the same way you connect directly to TV for viewing....just go to the capture card instead.
Another (not found yet) way I'm looking for 3rd party software that will work with the remote viewer and be recognized in other programs.......Good Luck

I use Splitcam for that. I wasn't able to connect it through my TV card - Pinnacle 300i. I simply started SplitCam, selected the TV card as input and the video showed up. I opened skype and selected SplitCam as input, done! Really that easy and it is freeware.

I finally found the solution. Canon S1...S5 IS can be used as a webcam, works also in Skype. Use cam4you software (the bundled Canon's remote capture can probably be used too!) and e2eSoft Vcam (http://www.e2esoft.cn/vcam/) to grab the live preview window. Works great!

you can also use the Canon SDK ( availabe upon request from them ) !

Not only can you use it as a webcam... its unbelievably clear, hi-res 640x480
