Are you getting any error messages at all? Any grinding noises or other weird symptoms? If the shutter itself is stuck and you can physically see it not opening, check to see if you can see what's stopping it. A firm puff of breath blown onto the shutter may remove dust if that is what is causing it to catch. But chances are pretty good if it's a physical problem you'd be looking at a repair bill to get it working again.

Thanks for the reply. No grinding noises or dust present. When the switch is on picture mode and the power button is pushed, the LCD displays the start-up cannon image (no error messages) the camera then beeps 3 times and shuts-off. My guess was the shutter b/c there is no movement whatsoever.

Shutter, or possibly power supply. Double check your batteries and make sure they're fully charged (try them in something else if you can to make sure they work properly). You can also try cleaning the connectors inside the camera's battery slot (use a Q-tip or something similar). If you exhaust that possibility, then it likely is the shutter and a physical repair.
