my lens cover is not working properly- does not trigger the camera to close or open

I have to take battery in and out to activate the camera. I just wondered if it was a common problem before I check on repair costs.

Jane,

You might have a charge issue on the battery. Is it fully charged? If so, it sounds like an issue with the camera. Because it is an older model, it may not be under warranty anymore. Before you let them repair it, ask for a price quote. It may be less expensive to buy a new camera with a warranty. Good luck.

Andrew

The cover activates a micro switch which turns the camera on. There is also a Litheum battery in the micro switch. I would say either the door is broke somehow to where it is not activating the switch, or maybe just the battery is dead. None of these parts are expensive, so a repair could be resonable. The door by itself from Canon (no Labor) was about $30 shipped to my door.

I will try that-- is it hard to find the micro battery? Did you remove the door or do I need to take it to a shop? The camera still works great so I hate to junk it-- I really hope your suggestion works- thanks

You have to remove the entire case from the camera. The battery is behind the door, but you can only get to it from the inside of the case. If I was to do it again, I would take it to a shop. The parts aren't that much and it would be well worth it to pay for an hour of their time to have it done right without the stress or hassle.

I also did a search for a service manual for this camera and found an online parts manual that shows all of the parts in an exploded view. Definitely required if you try to repair it yourself.

Thanks again. I will opt for the camera shop but at least I will have an idea of what the problem may be. I had already contacted Canon and didn't really get much other than trade it in for a newer one.
