High Resolution , low Noise , so-so Flash
( - 6/13/05)For me the S-70 is the perfect Camera.
I knew its shortcomings and strong points well before buying it.
I was looking for a Compact camera that I could carry everywhere I went without looking like a paparazzi. A 28mm (35mm wise) wide lens was another must, since I mainly wanted the camera for party's, birthdays, and holidays.
I didn't need or like a superzoom lens. All my pictures shot in the previous year were shot with an F4 with a 35-70 f:2.8 nikkor attached, so the 28 - 100 was more than enough for me.
What really made me buy the camera though was the High resolution pictures I stabled all over the net when examining pictures taken with the camera.
add the RAW option, full manual, shiftable program, along with Shutter priority, Aperture priority, program, and full auto, spot metering, Autoexposure lock, custom white balance among others.
The minor problems I spotted with this beauty are …
Autofocus on the telephoto end in low light is so so, unless your subject has strong detail to focus on, and even then when the light is low, even with the autofocus assist beam the camera struggles.
Flash not well controlled for subjects near the camera, and is useless for macro, creating a hot spot in the center of the picture.
But the camera is Perfect for the job I need it.
When I load the pictures in Photoshop , and apply unsharp mask with .3 radius and 300 percent the detail I see is amazing.
