BROKEN LCD SD 1000 POWERSHOT

I dropped my SD1000 today on a hike and need to find a way to get the LCD screen replaced. I'm thinking about buying a screen on Ebay and replacing it myself..Is this a good idea or should I pay the little extra to have Canon do it?
What have others done that have had this same problem?

Well, it really depends how much you know about a camera. Once you open it up it isn't exactly to put it back together again unless you know what you're doing and have a very good manual. If you're strapped for cash and its either replace it yourself or not using the camera, then I say go for the replacement. It's not really too hard, you just have to open up the camera, disconnect the old LCD, and plug in the new one. Much easier said than done, but it can be done. The risk that you break something in the process is very high. I would personally recommend sending it to Canon; if they happen to break something, then you get a new camera, plus they're experts and have the tools to do a procedure such as this. The repair cost to you will be just parts, about $15-20 usually for an LCD screen (I haven't check in a while, could be more expensive). The repair cost for you if you send it in to Canon: approximately $50-100 for the labor, plus the parts, so probably $100-150. That's just an estimate, it could easily be much lower or higher. The camera is now worth $300ish new, cheaper if you find it on sale. So pros and cons are up to you, but I think that's all I can say. If you need to know anything else, feel free to ask.

The camera casing is made up of two halves held together both by screws as well as snap on clips.
First timer usually break the clips while trying to separate the two halves. So be very careful if you want to DIY.

The LCD is connected to the circuit board by a flex cable. What you need to do is to remove it and take out the LCD, replace the new LCD, reinsert the cable firmly and replace the cover.

Sound simple, but a lot of patience is needed.

2. If you want to go ahead with it, read this article first before sourcing for the LCD.

3. LCD protector would cost around $10-15, but be prepared to pay $50 or more for the LCD.

Whoops, did the wrong search, I actually did find the LCD protector, sorry. Thanks for the correct bukit; you're best bet is probably either Canon or a certified dealer, or you can go the ebay route, but won't be guaranteed authenticity.
