There's a lot of debate on this boards about this, but I stand in the camp of needing to stick with Canon's LiOn batteries. Chiefly because there are a lot of cheap counterfeits out there - particularly on auction websites. And they overheat and could brick your camera (or worse). So, while you don't have to stick with the original battery, per se, I'd stay with only batteries recommended by Canon. Most are proprietary anyway because of the size of the compartments on each model.
