My lens wont go back in.

So I have the Canon Powershot SD1000 and I turned it on this morning, and the lens came out. Now, it says "lens error, restart camera" and the lens wont go in and it wont stay on or take pictures or anything. The lens isn't crooked or uneven. I tried banging it on a hard surface and pushing the lens in. Nothing has worked. HELP!

DO NOT DO THAT! You end up doing far more damage by stripping the rails when forcing it. Likely, you're having a power issue with your batteries. As the camera is about 2 years old, it's probably time to replace that LiOn battery. They lose capacity over time and even though you think it's charged, it's probably not carrying enough juice to power the camera.

It may also be it's out of alignment even if you think it isn't. Try cycling it on/off about 6 or 7 times to see if it works it's way back into alignment. If not, then I'd send it in for a repair estimate. But it's probably cheaper to get a new camera.

The lens error is common to earlier canons. I had hoped not this, but it apparently continues. The lens mechanism is extremely sensitive and not very robust. According to the people at Ritz Cameras, the error comes from resting the open camera in a manner which lets it lean forward on the extended lens. Once the error has happened, the only option is repair. For this reason Canon cameras may be the only small appliance for which a repair contract is advisable.
