How to turn "ON" the flash (not auto or off)?

The operation book that came with my camera states that I have a three (3) option on the flash -- ON -- OFF -- Auto. I do not see the "ON" option when I select the flash menu? How do I turn on the "ON" opition on this camera?

Isn't there a "flash" button on the camera itself? It's just a matter of cycling through the three options to get the ON option to appear. You'll know it because you'll see a lightning bolt icon on the screen.

Change the camera mode to portrait mode, or any other, not the auto mode. In the portrait mode you'll be able to turn the flash on. In the auto mode, you're giving the camera complete control, and it doesn't like giving up any part of that control.
