Have you tried resetting the camera? It sounds like the white balance is stuck and the lens stopped down. If that doesn't help, try changing out the battery. Absent that, you may be looking at a camera repair.

Well, since you've tried that and no go, I'd suggest you take out the batteries for about an hour and then see if that works. If it persists, then I'm going to suggest you send it in for repair while you still have a warranty on it.

Lucky, if you're losing the face in daylight, there's a good chance you're shooting them in a backlight situation. That's where the sun (or some other light source) is shining over their shoulders and into the lens of the camera. This causes the cameras' light meter to read it as far brighter than it actually is, causing it to stop down the lens and underexposing the subject. To compensate for this, you can either shoot with the sun source over YOUR shoulder and into their face, or use the beach or snow settings. You can also just shoot the shot with the flash on. This will help make your subject "pop" even in daylight.

As for zoom shooting in Alaska, Greenland, et al, the zoom is fair, but you can do better. Suggest you look at the Canon G9 or the Panasonic LX3.

That's very common, especially in the "magic hour" where it's dark enough to have shadows, but light enough to prevent the flash to engage. It's very common due to relying on automatic functions. You can try and use some of the presets, but in the end, you'll probably need to just use the manual flash in those situations.
