Cracked LCD - Canon repaired for free
( - 7/17/06)I was extremely disappointed when my LCD suddenly cracked, seemingly spontaneously, while on an overseas trip. I had owned it for just 4 months and took very good care of it. I tried to return it to Best Buy and was very dissatisfied with their customer service. The staff member clearly did not believe that I hadn't mishandled the camera in some way, and convinced me it would be a $250 repair (minimum) and it was not covered under warranty. I was outraged and ready to do battle when I called Canon's customer service line. It turned out that Canon was 100% supportive. The technician I spoke to was very helpful, and suggested I return it to the factory service center in Illinois with a letter explaining the issue. Two days later I received an e-mail from Canon that they would repair the camera at no charge, and less than 10 days later I had the camera in hand. I'm not happy that the LCD is so fragile, but overall I'm pleased with the camera. I have ordered an LCD Protector from 'da Products and will buy a new, well-padded camera case. I still have the Canon case that was so strongly recommended by the Best Buy sales person but do not intend to ever use it again as it clearly didn't protect the camera in the way it should have. I'm also writing a letter to Best Buy - I have been a loyal customer in the past, and am very disappointed that they treated me so poorly.
