Will the Sandisk Extreme III 4GB SDHD card work with this camera?

I'm pretty sure that I bought this just when it came out (less than 2 years ago). So, I'm not sure if the newer higher capacity SDHD cards will work.

Sorry looks like according to the canon website no. Your cam will only take sd cards.

I was hoping for a more definitive answer, ie "no, your camera WILL NOT accept SDHD cards" or "your camera ONLY accepts SD cards" rather than "your camera accepts SD cards". However, were it not for canonfan, I wouldn't have looked anywhere else. So, thanks Mike.

A response from Canon states "The PowerShot SD500 digital camera may be used with standard SD memory cards up to 2 GB in capacity. This camera is not compatible with the SDHC compliant memory cards. Due to the vast number of memory cards available on the market it is impossible to test every memory card. As a result we cannot guarantee proper operation of our camera with a specific memory card. With this in mind, you may wish to consider purchasing the memory card from a sales dealer that provides a return or exchange policy."

SD500 works with 4GB SD cards.
try to read this :
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/accessories/4gb-sd.shtml

it is only a matter of the FAT32 capacity that the SD500 has.

Best regards.
