The biggest difference is the megapixels. The SD450 has 5, and the SD500 has 7.
The SD500 is also plagued with a fragile LCD, according to users who own it. I'd avoid it. While some users of the SD450 report similar issues, it seems far less widespread. I'm very familiar with the SD450 and could definitely recommend it to you.
