SD700 IS vs. SD800 IS as back-up camera on Ireland trip? Which one might be easier/better for an 80+ yr old to use (my mom)?

I recently bought a Canon Rebel XTi DSLR (still low on learning curve) for an Ireland trip at the end of April. But I also want to get a smaller point and shoot camera for now (for my 80+ yr old mom to use in Ireland) and later (as my back-up or walking-around camera, carry in motorcycle bag, etc.).

I'm pretty much down to the SD700 IS and SD800 IS because I really like the IS features in a lens I bought for the XTi. I also like point&shooters with both LCD and traditional eyehole focusing.

Thoughts on these 2 cameras? Any reason to NOT get one of these and get the SD900 or SD1000?

A quick reply will be greatly appreciated because I probably have to buy the camera by April 16th to receive it before the plane takes off from JFK! ;-) THANKS!!

Buy the SD700, set it to Automatic, and your mom will shot beautiful pics. The SD700 takes better pics than the SD800, it has better glass. I have tested all these cameras, and am very pleased with the SD700. I use it as a backupcamera for my Nikon D200.

The only reason you might want to choose the SD800IS is for the 28mm wide-angle ability, which would let you get some nicer scenery shots. Everything is pretty-much identical, and the SD700IS supposedly has a higher sharpness because the lens isn't BETTER, but because there's just less in there. Fitting a 28-105mm lens into that small of a body is not easy. The 37-100mm SD700IS compromises on that, but does get a SLIGHTLY better image quality. For normal people who produce 3x5, 4x6 and 8x10" pictures, the difference is neglible at best.

Either camera will suit you fine. :) The SD900 is just an overpriced point-and-shoot, without IS! The SD1000 is built for ultra-compactness and also doesn't have IS. You picked out 2 good cameras!
