Problem with red eye

I bought 2 of these cameras last Christmas. One as a gift and one for myself. Both have a terible red eye problem. Even though the red eye reduction is on the pictures still have very bad red eye. Does anyone else have this problem and what can be done?

The SD700IS is one of the best "last generation" ultracompacts on the market. Some people are more susceptible to red eye than others (I rarely get it, but my sister always gets it, for example). Fortunately, there are extremely simple ways to get rid of red-eye on the computer using basic utilities (generall just dragging a square over an eye, and the red-eye goes away... pretty amazing).

Doe red-eye occur more/less often based on the distance away from the subject? I've noticed that there is generally a distance range where red-eye reduction is useless, but also a range where it works the best. Other than that, I don't think there's a cure. Sorry :-/

Matt, Thanks for your answer. I did not know some people are more susceptible, but I thought that might be part of the problem. My granddaughter always comes out with red eye and sometime the computer will not even fix it.Distance does not seem to make any difference. Thanks

The only program I need to use is the default picture viewer I received when I bought my computer. There's an option called "Fix" in the upper right-ish area, and under that is a Red Eye fix. You can then drag a square around the eye and it'll fix it. Have you tried that? If so, I'm sorry to hear it doesn't work!

The problem with ultracompact cameras is that the flash is so close to the lens that even a slightly offset flash before the shutter can't completely correct the problem. Even my SD800IS that I love has the occasional red-eye issue... but there hasn't been one I couldn't correct with the simple fix I mentioned above.

I don't know if this can possibly be an issue, but sometimes the camera's autofocus may not be focusing exactly on what you believe it's focusing on. This may make the camera think it's focusing on a different focal distance, and misjudge the strength of the flash and time delay on the red-eye avoidance flash.

In regards to some people being more susceptible to red eye in flash photos: If you ever notice a person having one eye being red eye and the other one not, that person should see an ophthalmologist pronto as they could have a serious eye problem.
