can i charge it via it's usb port? going walking into the mountains and want to charge it with a portable solar device.

I think you're out of luck. I do know that Kodak supports USB charging, but the Canon I don't think so. But that doesn't mean you can give up. You can always find an adapter that will take the solar energy and charge the battery through an AC battery charger. It would take some doing, but it's possible.
