With subtle differences, they're pretty much the same camera. What I would do is go to the Canon product page and on the right hand side, you'll see a button for Choose the Right Product. Select and then Product Comparison. Then you can compare up to three cameras side by side and notice the differences and similarities. I'd go with the SD1000is, between the two, but the SD990IS has the new DIGIC IV processor.
