What do you want in a camera?

The big difference here is size. If you want a pocket cam, get the 780. If you're not so concerened about size, get the A2100.

Agreed. I'll take it a step further - First thing I would do is go to the SD 790 IS Canon site. In the upper right hand corner you'll see a button for "choose the right product." Then, click on "product comparison." A popup window will let you compare up to three cameras for features. This will give you a chance to compare them side by side to see the differences, and more importantly, the similarities.

Next, check out this resource. It takes pictures with each and you can compare them side by side. Finally, when trying to make a final call, it may just come down to what camera feels good in your hand. Go to a local camera store and check both out side by side, holding them, feeling their center of gravity, the balance. How it sits in your hand. That usually sells me one way or the other.
