Do I still need my DSLR?
(Scott Wagner - 1/2/09)I bought this camera to replace an old 2MP point and shoot I used to carry as a back up to my Canon XTI DSLR. It's nice to have a small camera sometimes so you don't have to drag along a camera bag and all the gear. When I started looking I just wanted something relatively inexpensive, and that would have decent photo quality. I also wanted to stick with Canon since I already understood the interface, controls, and menus.
After reviewing many cameras I decided to get the Canon Powershot SD790 IS. I chose it because of the features like extra large view screen, 10MP, and video capability. My first pictures with this camera came out really well, and I recently took it with me on a trip to Mexico along with my DSLR.
I carried the SD790 IS in my pocket while I kept my DSLR in hand to take shots and at first just used the SD790 IS to take some shots that would otherwise require a lense change with the DSLR, or for short video clips. Before long I started leaving the DSLR in the hotel room, and took most of my pictures with the SD790 IS. After returing home and reviewing the pictures I was amazed at the quality the SD790 IS provided, and that they were actually pretty close to the quality provided by my DSLR.
Now, don't get me wrong... the DSLR has features a point and shoot will never have, but if you are looking for something to carry in your pocket this is a great choice.
I can't say enough good things about the SD790 IS. Great view screen, battery life, interface/controls, and videos (with sound!) etc. The only real limit I see is the zoom capability, 3X is pretty short and the digital zoom beyond that reduces quality a bunch. (this is true of almost all compacts).
If you want to see some pictures check them out on my webshots page in the 7 mexico albums. When reviewing a picture if you scroll all the way down past the photo you will see an area on the right hand side of the screen that provides "camera data". Then you can see if I took the picture with the SD790 IS or my XTI DSLR.
Enjoy!
