Beginner, should I purchase a Nikon CoolPix S9 or a Canon Powershot SD600?

Just a beginner . . .

. . . looking to purchase a camera that I can grow into.

I've got it down to these two cameras, however I don't mind someone recommending me others.

I've been basically going by reviews, however I'm beginning to understand the specifications in
which I desire. Although I'm afraid I don't have enough experience yet to determine what I'll
actually need.

I think the S9 would be a better choice because in my experience, Nikons have better lenses overall. Although Canon and Nikon are both ranked very high on my list of favorite cameras, I am going to have to go with the Nikon on this one because of the considerable price difference and because the S9 is thinner than the canon. Also, I like that the lens doesn't actually protrude from the S9, which means it is less likely to be broken.

Are there any others that you would recommend over the Nikon? I'm specifically looking for a camera that I can grow with . . .

. . . or do you believe its the best choice for me at the moment?

One more word on the SD600: the LCD is pretty darned fragile.

The S9 is a wonderful little camera but it depends on what you mean by a camera you can grow with. The S9 offers auto control only, and if you want to grow in terms of photo skills you may want to consider something with manual control options.
