My digital zoom option in the menu is off and not highlighted. How do I turn it back on?

My suggestion ... DON'T. Digital zoom isn't a zoom at all. It's basically enlargement of the image pixels to fake a zoom. The problem with that is that you end up with poor image quality due to a lack of sharpness, artifacting, and camera shake. And you can do better just by cropping the image in a photo editor.

I'm with James on this one, digital zoom should never be used, until post-editing. But, if you desire to turn it on, you are probably just shooting in a mode it is not compatible with, like 16 x 9 wide mode. Try changing the mode and you should be able to use the digital zoom.

Thanks, I have no idea how to use a lot of the options but did notice my camera was not zooming out as much as before. I haven't tried the options suggested but will. both answers deal with issues I havent tried yet so both seem like best answers to me, I will post what happens and again thanks so much to both of you for a response. My zoom had produced some clear quality prints (I have a ranch and am not able to get as close as I would like for animal shots...really like a zoom feature.)

Yeah, that is the one time that digital zoom may come in handy. Still, I would recommend trying to blow the picture up with a computer afterward. This will help eliminate shakiness and blur while taking the photo originally.

Not to mention that as you blow it up with, say Photoshop, you can tweak and sharpen the image some to compensate for any pixelization which will fuzzy up the image.
