Date imprint on 870 is

Can I only get date imprint shooting in postcard mode? How will this mode show up on 4x6 prints? Do I have to use zoombrowser software to imprint date. Looks like I have to do individually(no default setting) and looks like I can do it only in print mode. What are my options if i want date imprinted and use adobe or koadakgallery? I also have adigital pictureframe. Any way to have date imprinted for this? I know this is alot but my old Dimage did it and i figured this should be pretty standard. Thx.

Yes, that's the only way to do it. Unless you want to do it in a photo editor. As for having to use Zoom Browser, ABSOLUTELY NOT! My recommendation is Adobe Photoshop Elements or Picasa by Google.

Sure, you can use a photo editor to add the date if you physically want to see it. Just remember that a digital file is already marked with the date/time it was taken in the meta data. But when you edit the picture (including adding a date) you change that meta data to the date of the last edit.

Another option may be to connect it to a Canon Printer ... IIRC, there may be a date printing option in the PictBridge utility to add the date.

I contacted Canon Support by E-Mail. I was advised to go to Zoom Browser, with instructions on how to
embed date on each individual photo image. I am not interested in adding date after images have been
down loaded to hard drive. For any of you still interested, Canon has a toll-free number
1-866-261-9362. dvoge brought up good question, "What are disadvantages to shooting in postcard mode"?
Thanks everyone for your input

Well, that depends. Here's how the postcard mode works: When selected, the Postcard mode also deliberately crops the image creating a slightly longer rectangle to fill a 4 x 6 postcard. When shooting in Postcard mode the camera automatically reduces the resolution to 1600 x 1200 with fine compression (an ideal setting for 4 x 6 images with no need for the user to manually set the resolution and compression).

I spoke with Canon and they said that using postcard mode will only allow the camera to use 1.8mp of the 8 available. Could have spent less than half the money to get what I wanted. I never knew to ask the question since my old digital(bought 5 years ago) had the option. I hate technology. Not knowing what to ask is the most frustrating part. Does anyone know of a current digital that has a date imprint option for all modes? Thx. Dave

Yeah, that is a real drag, David. Unfortunately, as the digital file is marked by a date and time when it's saved, the use of a date stamp feature in digital cameras has lost popularity amongst camera manufacturers as a feature. Sorry, but the AS710A's postcard feature may be the best you can do unless you're willing to add the date/time after the fact.

I have a kodak easy share DX7590, 5.0 mega pixels, which imprints date in all modes. Camera is larger
than the canon 870, so I haven't used it very often since I purchased the canon 870. The Kodak is an
excellent camera and takes great pics.

That may be true, Bob. Some do offer the feature. But as point and shoots become stuffed with more ancilliary features like face detection, smile shutter, image stabilization, and the myth of more MP, something has to go and for many camera manufacturers, that was date stamping.

Thanks James, I agree, my kodak is about five years old. I have another question. I have been trying to download pics from my hard drive on to a dvd that will play on my Toshiba dvd player. I have tried several times and keep getting message "check disc" or "disc error" I contacted canon support by E-Mail and was told that the canon 870 will only work with Windows XP with DVD-R or DVD-RW.
I have windows VISTA. What are my options??

I can tell you what it is, you're burning the DVD incorrectly in Vista. Microsoft changed the way to burn DVDs and as such, it's really easy to get that error. Search your "help" for burning DVD and you will get two choices of how to burn them - Live File System format and Mastered format. Mastered format will give you a highly compatible DVD.

I used Vista and -Rs with no trouble now. But initially, I was making coaster after coaster.

As for using the only XP, that's nonsense. Once the pictures are on your PC, it doesn't matter what your OS is.

Thanks a lot James, you are a semi-genius. I kept probing Canon Support and I just got a reply stating that the XP stuff was incorrect. However, when I try to burn a DVD, I am not given a choice on how to format. It starts formatting automatically and my dozen or so burned DVD's will not play on my DVD Player. Can you give me step by step info on how to get to mastered format??

I hate to sluff this off, but you already have it in your Windows help file. Just go to Start, then Help and type in Burning DVDs. You'll see step by step.

The Nikon S560 will imprint the date on a photo. The imprinted date on a photo is one of my personal preferences.
