SD880 or SD870?

I've finally decided to join the 21st century and buy my first ever digital camera. After a lot of researching online, I've decided on either the Canon SD880 or the SD870. The SD880 does get better reviews on pretty much every site, but since it costs more I just wanted to know if it's really worth the money.
I'll be taking pictures of family, friends and pets mainly, but would like to have some extra features to play around with as a hobby.

Easy to use, long battery life, and the ability to take fast pictures [its impossible to get cats to sit still!] are what I'm looking for, does the SD880 deliver? Any other Canon Powershot's I should look into?

Go for the SD880. It's really not that much more expensive, and it's newer.

But here's the thing. With about 99.9% of all your pictures being snapshots, what are you paying for other than 2 extra MP you're not even going to see until enlargements get over 8x10? Sure, it's newer. But then again, it does have the advantage of recording video in H.264, which the 870 doesn't. That translates to better quality video, while keeping the file sizes manageable on your card. That means more recording time without sacrificing quality. The 880 also has a slightly longer zoom and can shoot slightly faster..

So on balance, I gotta go with the SD880 as well. You may be paying more for MP you're not really going to see, but you get the better quality video and longer focal length which makes up for it.

What about "more megapixel=more noise" issue? Is 880 noisier then 870?

Probably at higher ISOs (above 800). It can happen in any camera where the MP is increased but the chip size isn't. However, it's usually more prevalent in cameras with MP around 12 and above.

It is "reinforced plastic" according to Canon. (and the screen plastic cover can get a few scratches easily) If you look for better body make quality look at Fujifilm FD100f
