How does the SD890 compare with the SD880? Which is better for me if I'm looking for excellent quality photos and quick shutter speed?

I'm a working mom of three young kids. I have been researching a new camera to put in my pocket whereever we go. Photo quality and shutter speed are very important to me (so I can catch my toddler's smile quickly!) I've done much research and was ready to purchase the Cannon SD880 IS. However the owner of the camera shop told me that the 890 is better and an update of the 880. The main difference I see is the increase zoom range. (they are about the same price). The increased zoom is not attractive to me IF it means sacrificing photo quality or shutter speed, or some other feature I'm not thinking about!?? please help

First thing I would do is go to the SD 880 IS Canon site. In the upper right hand corner you'll see a button for "choose the right product." Then, click on "product comparison." A popup window will let you compare up to three cameras for features. This will give you a chance to compare them side by side to see the differences, and more importantly, the similarities.

Next, check out this resource. It takes pictures with each and you can compare them side by side.

The bottom line though, is that with the exception of subtle differences, they are essentially the same camera because they're from the same SD line. But one thing. Don't get caught up in the "larger LCD screen is better" myth. Sure, you get a 1/2" larger screen, but you sacrifice battery power to run it. Power that's better used to take pictures.

And although you don't think the zoom range is that big a deal, what you should be paying attention to is the wide angle. Taking a lot of group photos and landscapes, that wider focal length on the SD880 will come in handy. But I'd prefer having the viewfinder. So go with the SD890 anyway.
