SD890 or A2000 for kids and everyday use?

I am looking for a camera to carry around for everyday shots of primarily my kids (3 and 7). I have a Canon Digital Rebel, love it, but want something more portable as I said for the everyday shots. I prefer Canon from the reviews and my own personal experience but would consider other reliable brands as well. I would like some zoom 5x or higher (probably because I'm used to having that option with my lenses for my SLR). I have mixed thoughts on the viewfinder or not, since this is my first point and shoot digital camera.

Well, both cameras should be able to do the job. The Elph series are usually thinner and are more expensive, opposed to the A-series. I have a Sony W170 and like it. It's a compact point & shoot with a wide-angle (28mm) 5x zoom lens. Sony, Nikon, Olympus and Panasonic also make great digital cameras. The market is very competitive, which is good for the consumer. One thing that turned me away from Canon was their use of plastic. I'd prefer a full metal body, including metal tripod mount, which Sony offers. I had a metal-bodied Sony W5 for about 4 years. It has survived many drops and still works to this day. Brands to avoid are: Kodak & Casio. Both companies tend to produce lower-end cameras, many of which are plagued by hardware problems. Try some cameras at a camera shop to see if you like the design/feel. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice. I figured that was the case about the Canons and also have seriously considered the Sony W170. The only reason I stuck to Canon was because my experience with my Canon digital SLR has been terrific. Well, I decided to do a test run of both. I picked up both the A2000 and sd890 and plan to take pictures of the same objects and situations with my kids and see what I think. I made sure that the retail store knew I would be returning one of them and they understood my plan to compare them. I have taken just a few indoor shots today and so far it's still kind of a toss up, but indoors, the color on the sd890 seems to be a little more accurate.
