Canon Powershot 890 and the "Fatal Error" message

Just wondering if anyone has had the "fatal error" message with the canon powershot sd890. I was all set to buy one of these cameras but then came across a forum discussing how certain canons were known for the problem which in many cases renders them useless, and the canon company refuses to acknowledge there is a problem, and therefore refuses the fix it without charging $$. Just wondering if anyone has had this particular problem with the SD890 (before i purchase one)???

Canon has had to contend with E18 errors over the years. Mostly, they have been overcome. But the talk of the error still persists. There's an entire website devoted to this. In a nutshell, Canon E18 error happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.

If your camera gets it and is still under warranty, the best thing you can do is have Canon should fix it.

Three days into a week long vacation, I got this same error, now I can't even get the camera to stay on long enough to download the pics I took before the error. My warranty expired last month - seems more like an expensive disposable camera if it can't last even 18 months.
