SD970 appears newer than SD990. What are the differences and which is better in your opinion?

I'd suggest checking out the specs on Canon's web site. The 970 is indeed very new. One thing that jumps out at me is that it has a larger sensor (a good thing) and should be very competitive with the 990 in terms of image quality — despite having a slightly lower megapixel number. It also has a larger LCD display BUT no optical viewfinder. The lenses are different, as well.

The cameras have very different feature sets, and you should look at that carefully to see what is important to you before deciding on which you want. As far as price, they're practically identical; only a $20 difference in their listed prices.

Actually, the SD970 uses the same smaller sensor which is used in the SD880. It does cram more photosites onto the sensor making it 12.1 effective MP, but that is not necessarily an improvement. The SD990 does still have the largest sensor in the SD line. Add the view finder of the SD990 and the Flash compensation of the SD990 and a faster continuous shooting speed of the SD990 and I think you'll find none of the current offerings from Canon best the SD990 in any way other than "Wow factors" like "blink technology" "shake to advance picture" 720p HD Video, and a couple other effects like "focus blur" and "creative lighting."

None of the "Wow factors" are enough to make up for less quality in the photo because of lower sensitivity to light (greater density packed sensor) and loss of detail (again from an over packed sensor). I tend to look at photo quality first and foremost, so my recommendation is still the SD990 for that reason. I may not be able to shake my camera and show my friends a new picture each shake, or I may have to review the picture in the LCD to see if anyone had their eyes closed before they walk away, but I can trade those off any day for better low light photos and more fine detail in the image that I get with the SD990.

Let's all hope that Canon begins to place the larger sensor of the SD990 and G10 in more of their cameras, rather than using the smaller one and just cramming on more photocell sites on it making for less image quality. I'm all for "Wow factor" but not at the cost of image quality.

Steve: the SD990 does have the largest sensor in the SD line, but remember it also has the largest photocell count (14.7MP) "crammed" into it.
