This sounds like a serious problem and you should contact Canon customer support directly to get your camera repaired.

hi kk
this actually happened to me and it's not really serious...just a glitch.
i googled it and believe it or not, the solution is very simple.
you need to bang the side of the camera against your hand, and it will resolve the issue.
don't remember which side of the camera, but just try both.
hope it helps.
works with mine everytime!

Be warned that banging the camera around will void your warranty, if you have one.

Maria is right that there are ways of banging it that help solve this problem... but if it's new/ still under warranty/ still worth it to you, please just send it in for repair as mbrady suggested!

I agree with brenda. It does mess up the camera if you hit the side.! I'm looking up answers for my mom and i think banging the side is gay.! i tried that and it did nothing.! her camera is probably just some cheap SX100. or just a copy/ replica.! I also have a Panasonic camera, and i dropped it and my lens didnt come out at all. I bang it and it did it just messd up the vision for it. I banged it again and it focused but kept shutting off.
in other words BANGING IT DOESNT WORK(:
