Does the SX10 have any reportable Error problems with the lens motor that other models have had?

I have had an S2 for 4 years now. LOVE it, but currently am experiencing the dreaded E18 error code when using the zoom. Fortunately, so far it is not frozen. But, I think it's only a matter of time. I am looking to replace it and I LOVE the idea of a bigger zoom. But not if Canon isn't going to stand behind it's product or if they don't have that bug worked out of their products.

The SX10 is getting great marks and I haven't heard of any e18 issues. I think the SX10 is a good choice. And when you consider that you got 4 years use before an e18 popped up, I'd say your S2 had a pretty good lifespan. 4 years is about right to get a new camera.

I think almost all of the Canon cameras have eliminated the E18 error for the last year, or maybe two. Also the new SX models have a new lens focusing method, using quieter zooming, and also allowing you to use the zoom during video. It's a pretty innovative addition.

Not to mention that it now has the updated DIGIC IV processor which improves face detection and image processing to improve the image color and clarity. But yes, zooming during video is a great breakthrough that Canon can finally hang their hat on.

If it's the e18 lens error, your best bet is to send it in to Canon while it's still under warranty. If another kind, try resetting the camera and use more powerful batteries. Batteries with an mAh of at least 2500 is what you want to power your camera. I'd also check to see if Canon has released a firmware update. But if these don't help, then I'd get it to Canon while the warranty is in force.

I had a problem and that was, at short distance camera lens was not able to focus i.e between 1 meter and 3 meter and also there was aunnecessary sound from lens motor. I sent it back for repair and the problem is now solved.

There is no factual information I see available to suggest that Canon has eliminated their lens error problem. I purchased a camera last year and it got a lens error. Canon repaired it and again after 3 months, lens error appeared. And my camera has always been handled gently.

There is another issue that contributes to the lens error. It is the "cover" from which the lens extends. By "cover" I mean the ring around the area where the lens extends. It is easilt identified by the words Image Stabilization. This cover is CHEAPLY attached with what appears to be putty or rubber glue. Mine has detached and is causing interference with lens extension causing the error. It is still under warranty and I have sent back for repair. No word back from Canon yet. Canon customer service wanted ME to pay to have it sent back to them for their cheap construction and ultimate part failure. When I mentioned that others have encountered the same issue making this a design failure, they issued me a pre-paid shipping label. We shall see if they honor the warranty or find an excuse to not honor it.

Too bad such as good camera has a lens issue. It’s still on the one year warranty so ill be sending it in. I noticed that when I turn on the camera for the first time after not using it for a while it always gives me a lens error, but if I close it and reopen it within five minuets or so the lens error doesn’t appear. The batteries are good, I always have a fresh set on hand, and the camera has never been misused or dropped ,it has always been in a double closing camera bag.
