In my opinion I would go with the SX100, or even the G9 if you felt compelled, just based on image quality. When I used the TZ5 and the G9, the G9 produced much sharper images with better contrast and color, as most Canon's do, but you can search for images on the web that compare the two images side by side and check it out that way. The SX110 is very similar to the G9, having a bit less megapixels and advanced features, but a smaller stature, and similar CCD, making the image quality basically the same. So the photo quality of your flowers will be much better, as well any landscape shots you take. Check out the G9 as well, more manual controls, more megapixels, though not as much zoom.

One important thing should b noted. Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Olympus are traditional imaging equipment makers. On the other hand Sony, Matsushita and Samsung are consumer electronics makers. They don’t possess the imaging technology. Therefore, they bought it from Konica-Minolta, Olympus and Pentax respectively. With that they’ve jumped into this fast growing market in order to grab chunks of this funfest. Obviously there’s every reason to doubt whether their products will be as good as the traditional ones. Therefore, I would suggest to go for traditionalism. And when it comes to DSLRs, traditional brand is a must.

Madhu, I know this board is several months old, but please let me know what you have decided. I have the exact same question as you, as I will be taking pics of my kids, need the zoom for those assemblies, and I love to take macro pictures in my garden. My old old Canon G3 took beautiful pictures and fantastic macro pictures (but only X3 zoom, and the thing is big and heavy as a rock). Thanks for any info you leave.

I have a PowerShot SX110 IS. It takes fantastic pictures at both wide angle and extreme telephoto with 10x zoom that is expandable to 40x with built-in teleconverter support. Furthermore, it takes amazing macro shots. Some of my flower pix taken at macro option are worth featuring on calenders. It's a megazoom P&S digicam with excellent options addressing almost all possible situations. Also more committed users can play with the manual options that will certainly help them prepare for upgrading to DSLRs. Hope you find this worthwhile. Thnx.

Quazi, thank you for your information, it is very helpful to me. I have looked for sx110 sample pictures but have not found much. Even Dpreview only has two pictures from an sx110, (in a comparison with other cameras), the landscape picture was great:
dpreview.com/reviews/Q408enthusiastgroup/page11.asp
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408enthusiastgroup/page12.asp

but the picture of two young woman is quite awful, way too soft,I wonder if the camara was set wrong:

Are your photos online where I can see what the sx110 can really do? I would love to know what quality of macro photos would be like.

Thank you for your help and info
