battery compartment

The battery compartment is very difficult to open. Takes two hands and then some 'encouraging' to open. I notice the tops of the batteries have scratch marks in them. Doesn't seem normal and believe it will break within 6 months and I won't have any recourse with Best Buy. First mistake buying it there, I know, but I needed it quick! If this is normal for this camera then I will not pursue any further. Thank you for any information.

This review http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-sx110-is/9986.html agrees with your complaint about the battery door being difficult to open. Broken battery doors make these cameras essentially toast since repairs are so expensive as to encourage one to replace it instead of repairing it. If you seriously think it will break with regular use (even with care) and you have the option to return/exchange it I would recommend doing so since there are lots of cameras out there to choose from (but the price on this one is certainly attractive).
Here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=canon_sx110is is another page of user opinions at least one (the bottom one) of which returned the camera due to the risk of worn out/broken battery door.
Obviously, Canon tried to slice away every thing they could on this camera to get the price down. Maybe they went just a little too far.
