Canon Powershot SX200 IS Details

Editors' Comments

[Read our full Canon SX200 review] Canon has now entered the compact zoom market that Panasonic has typically dominated with a compact 12x zoom camera that has a vintage, rangefinder-like aesthetic. The Canon Powershot SX200 IS is clearly aimed at cameras like the Lumix ZS3, which provide long-range zooms in tiny, compact bodies. The SX200 IS provides strong competition with a 12x optical zoom and 28mm wide-angle lens, as well as a high-definition movie mode with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution. This has sold well because of the Canon name, but we prefer the Panasonic ZS3 -- same features, lower cost, and it's tough to beat Panasonic's long history making these type of cameras.

  • Canon Powershot SX200 IS Review

Despite a few minute design concerns, the 12.1-megapixel Canon SX200 performed quite well, yielding high-quality still photos and extraordinary high-definition video. Its 12x optical zoom lens is just the icing on the cake. By Michael Patrick Brady
  • Best Fun Zoom Cameras

"Fun zoom," isn't an official, industry-recognized term. It's just what we like to call the range of point-and-shoots with good picture quality, ease of use, portability, and big zooms. They're kind of like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord of digital cameras--solid, mid-range products that are built to perform well, even if they aren't the most glamorous or luxurious out on the market. See how we rate four of them below.
