Too soon to tell. It's fairly common that zoom doesn't happen while recording due to motor noise of the lens as it zooms being recorded. Some allow digital zoom, but not optical for that reason. But several camera lines have figured a way around it.

I understand that. But the camera is so new, that there aren't any reviews out there to tell.

Digital zoom is fairly worthless as it doesn't really zoom so much as it blows up the image - causing exaggerated camera shake and artifacting due to heavy pixelization. (think of it like a xerox that is enlarged and then taking that enlarged zerox and enlarging that - you lose clarity exponentially).

Most digital still cameras in this range don't have zoom capability while recording. If that's a deal breaker, you're better off looking at a hand held camcorder which takes stills and writes them to a memory card. The quality is approaching 6MB on some hidef models.

I owned a Canon S1 IS before, and it did zoom (optical) while in movie mode; I don't see why Canon couldn't therefore put the same feature into the SX200. Of course, nobody in the US will really know until it is actually released late March, I am thinking.

DCresource has a review today: no optical zoom in movie mode, you have to go to SX10 or to Panasonic sz3 for that. It's a pity.

This camera does not allow you optical zoom once the video recording has started. Although you can zoom in and out in the video mode before you start recording

I think it's a toss up, actually. Panasonic has been making some pretty good models of late. And Canon is consistently top notch. What I would do is go to this resource - which takes sample images and you can compare them side by side. It doesn't have the TS3, but it does have the TS1 & TS5, so you should get a pretty good idea of how the TS3 may perform in the same arena.
