Attaching Old Nikon lenses to a digital camera

I have a number of old Nikon Lenses. Is there a way to attach to a digital Camera? What kind of camera and what adaptors are needed? Is it worth the effort?

If you're looking to attach those old Nikons to the Rebel above, you'd need an adapter which I'm not sure even exists. And if it did, you'd only have manual only, a loss of about a stop in light and clarity problems because of the adapter. Better to get a Nikon D60 and use them natively (although you still will only get manual).

I do not own a digital SLR camera so the Nikon D60 would be fine for me. My second question was "Is it worth the effort?" The optical quality of the lenses are excellent and I own about 7 different lenses which I hate to give up.

I guess my question in response is ... what, you kiddin'? OF COURSE! Nikon makes some of the greatest glass in the world. There's a legacy there and you will see marvelous results with them.

Be aware that the D60 does not have an in-body motor, meaning that there are a limited number of lenses that will auto focus on this body. Many newer Nikon lenses are being made with built-in motors to solve this problem, but if your lenses aren't among those then you will be manually focusing. If that's not a problem then you're gold.

If you go here:

and scroll down to the gray box beneath the photos, you'll see a list called Lens Compatibility that breaks this down further.

Thus the reason I mentioned that it would probably be manual only.

Too early in the day for me. Need to read slower.

FWIW, I think the older model (the F70?) didn't have this issue with auto-focus compatibility. I'm not sure why they changed that other than perhaps to get some of the newer lenses moving off the shelves. Not that it's really an issue, as manually focusing isn't a huge deal, but for some users it seems to be a point of contention.

I can see that. In the end, legacy support like Nikon enjoys can cause fewer experienced users from buying newer lenses when they can just use their older ones. After all, bodies can come and go, but the glass ...

I tried to use the manuel Nikon Lenses with a Nikon D50 that my friend let me try and they did not work. Is the D60 or above what I need? I have another friend who just bought the D90. Will the lenses work with this camera?
