Free? you kidding? What's the catch? The XT is still an outstanding DSLR option. It's a tad old by about a year, but so what? If someone offered it to me, I'd take it and never look back. And besides, think about it as a system. You get the XT, use it to learn photography, then you can upgrade the body and keep using the lenses.
Free is always a good deal, as long as there's no catch. But even if you had to pay say, $200 for it, it'd still be a great deal.
