My Canon 350 D gives me a reading of 1/8 at f5 although I have the Canon Speedlite 420 attached, in auto, or Program mode, what could be the proble

I'm shooting a pair of black and white golf shoes at a distance of 2 feet. First, I used the built-in flash without a problem, shot at 1/60 at f5. Then I tried my Speedlite, I shot at Program mode at ISO 100; 1/13 f4.5; then at Manual mode shot at 1/60 f5, most of the time it was blown out, other times the frames were dark.

Clean your contacts. They may be dirty or oily causing a problem with connectivity. A pencil eraser should do the trick. Also make sure you have fresh batteries. You've confirmed the 420 is compatible with the 350D? Can you shoot on manual and get the results you want?
