When people mention AA batteries, they are talking about the Alkaline AA batteries commonly sold over the counter.
These cannot be recharged.
Digital camera makers also recommend rechargeable Nikel Metahydride AA size batteries commonly labelled as Ni MH. These are rechargeable and in a pack form, it is sold with a free charger.
Sometimes you might come across another type of rechargeable AA size battery called Ni CD. CD stands for Cadmium. These were popular during the earlier days but have been largely replaced by Ni MH.
Cameras design for use with AA batteries work with all the three types of AA size batteries, including the latest AA size Lithium ion batteries sold by Kodak which is also not rechargeable.
Cost :
AA alkalines is very cheap, a pack of 40s sell for about $ 15.64.
Ni MH sells at 4 pcs for $10.99 and Kodak Lithium Ion CRV3 sells for about $6.99.
