Using new AA batteries, camera does not power on

Just received new camera. Camera usually will not power on at all, but sometimes comes on for just a fraction of a second before shutting off. Replaced the AA batteries that came with teh camera with new ones, same problem. Could the problem be in the power supply? Thank you.

Could be underpowered batteries, are you using what's recommended? You want batteries with an mAh of at least 2500. 3000 even better.

I am using alkaline AA batteries, as recommended in the user manual. I have replaced the ones that came with the camera with new ones 2 times. I have heard (from other sources) that NiMH batteries are preferred, but they are only 1.2 V instead of alkalines' 1.5 V, so I don't see how they could be better. Is voltage not everything? Maybe NiMH batteries deliver more current, therefore more power? I am reluctant to invest in NiMH batteries and charger unless I know it will solve this problem. Anyone have any insight re NiMH batteries?

I went ahead and invested in the NiMH batteries, and despite the lower voltage, they work great! Must be higher power. All the documentation says alkaline batteries are recommended, but that must be incorrect. Thank you for your help, James.
