what kind of memory is best, sd, extreme sd, xd? please help!!

I need to buy some type of memory card for for my s700. The xd cards are so expensive, but if it will make it work faster for shot to shot maybe it is worth it. Does this camera work with 4GB SD card and is that faster than 2GB xd card? What are these extreme cards I keep reading about? Any help would be great. Also it needs to work with a card reader because our usb port on the camera is broken. Thank you much.

Kim,

The word "best" is really subjective in the type of memory. Your camera will only work with xD or SD cards. I've had great luck with SD cards and have little experience with xD memory. If you get a card with faster write speed, your camera will be more responsive. The "extreme" cards are usually the ones with a faster write speed.

As for the larger, 4GB SD cards, you have to be careful with these. Not all of them are compatible with digital cameras. They are not necessarily faster than xD cards either. They will store more than a 2GB card. Your camera is not compatible with any 4GB cards though. Page 22 of the user manual outlines the SD cards that are compatible with your camera.

You can purchase a multi-card reader that will work with multiple memory types. This one works with both SD and xD cards. Good luck and happy shooting.

Thanks,
I will go with the 2gb extreme card. I did read some other reviews online that I could use a 4gb extreme card, but then others had problems with them. So I think I will stay safe with this one. Hopefully my camera will work faster than it had been with my current .5gb sd card.

Now I am a little confused. How can you tell if a card has a faster write speed?

I use compact flash from lexar and the notation on it is 80x, 133x, etc. the higher the number the faster the write speed.

So do SD cards have a faster write speed then XD cards? I have never used the SD since my last camera would only accept the XD cards.
