To meet your specifications, and not purchase a dSLR camera, you will have to purchase either the Panasonic FZ50 or the Fuji S9000 Zoom. Both are over 9MP with extended zoom capabilities of over 10x optical zoom and will offer high quality pictures. As for your question on Sony vs. Canon: both companies make great products, and have been doing so for a long time. User preference really comes into play with high quality products. I would recommend going into a retailer to handle some example cameras to see how they feel in your hand. If you go with quality, you should be comfortable with it at the same time. Good luck and happy shooting.
