This camera should be just fine for outdoor sports shots. You might find the 3x optical zoom wanting though. Indoor shots won't be bad either with the higher ISO settings, as long as you don't need to use a flash. The effective range of the flash is approximately 0.6 to 15.7 feet. If you don't mind a larger camera, you can get an effective extended zoom camera in the same price range. Something like the Sony H5 or the Sony S9000 would be great alternatives.
