Check your settings to see if the camera it writing to the internal memory. If so, you can change it back to the card. Reset the camera itself. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

Lastly, if you lost the pictures on a memory card, they may still be there and the camera just can't read the card. Try a USB memory card reader and open the card on your PC - if you see the pics, drag and drop them onto your hard drive. If not, then, you can use a utility like "F-Recovery" to get back your pictures and recover your card.

I had the same thing happen...I was at a fair and realized my battery area had opened. I got the same message and knew for some reason it wasn't reading my memory card. Somehow my memory card fell out. I wasn't meant to lose it because my husband found it on the ground about 1/2 hour later. I am not sure why but mine has opened a couple of times now. I think it doesn't latch as tight as it should.

That is truly odd as the card cavity is designed to push in to lock into place and push in again to release the card. So it shouldn't just "fall out" unless something in the mechanism has broken lose. I'd have it looked at. Still under warranty?
