Hi Claude,

You are running Windows XP, correct? What happens when you connect the camera via USB? You ought to be able to open My Computer see the camera listed there.

You are correct, the drivers for Windows 98 and XP should be the same for this camera so the ones on your disc should work. Did you have the camera installed before? If so, I recommend going into your Add/ Remove Programs and totally removing the camera if it is still installed; then restart the computer and try all over again with the disc. If you made any changes to your computer your drivers might have gotten confused in some way and they just need a fresh start.

First let's make sure we're doing the same steps:
-Install drivers
-Turn camera on and set to Playback
-Plug camera USB into camera and into computer
-Computer should automatically recognize the camera and pop up a window asking what you want to do with the new hardware (i.e. open files, etc.)

If you're doing all of it right but that last step is not happening, I'm willing to bet there's a bad connection. I had this identical issue with a digital camera once and it turned out that the USB port on the side of the camera was bad. I solved the problem by buying a card reader and used that to hook up to the computer and download photos. If you're using a memory card, this might be an idea. Not an ideal solution since you have to go out and buy a card reader, but once you have one it does save on camera batteries and makes the process a lot easier.

Is there anything else you can plug into your computer using that USB cord, like a printer or another camera or something? If that worked, then it would isolate the problem to the camera port.

I wonder if there is even an XP driver for this thing. I know Gateway discontinued it. I had the same problem she did, and when I went to Gateway's site to download the driver they say they only have the 98 version. Will that driver work?

I'd be kind of ticked off if they just decided they weren't going to update the driver.

Dave,

XP has built in driver to recognize this camera. You need not go round looking for one because there is none.
Win 98, on the other hand is different. You need to provide a driver and Win98 driver will not work in XP.

There was a question in this Q&A some two years ago where the wife complaints her XP does not recognize her Camera, whereas her husbands XP does.
When a User come across such problems, it probably means XP needs to be re-installed to provide a clean OS.

Actually if you invest in a $10 card reader, you can use it to download all the pictures taken by the camera.
I wouldn't worry about the computer not recognizing the camera at all, if you plan to buy the camera.
