2 Camera's now dead

I bought this camera 1.5 years ago, within 7 days the first camera died. It turned its self off and hadn't retracted the lense. They replaced the camera no problems.

This one has been fine until recently; initially when using the LCD screen with ZOOM, the ZOOM would cause it to shut the camera down with green lines vertically over the lcd screen, eventually it shut down and no longer would power up.

I now have a dead camera on my hands. :(

Not good for a University student with little money to purchase another camera to keep those fond memory's of my 9month old boys first achievements.
