i turn the camera on, the lens comes out does this weird creaking noise, E104 appears on the bottom in a black line and then the whole thing shuts down with the lens still out. when i trun it "on" again it goes in, comes out and does it all over. does anyone have home remedy for this or does it need to be taken in?

These errors display because the lens will not move. There are several reasons why the camera lens might not move:

*
something is blocking the lens
*
the firmware version is old
*
the camera has been abused
*
foreign material is inside the lens
or
*
the lens is loose or completely off the track

Solution
Follow all of the steps listed below.

1.
Perform a power reset on the camera.
1.
Turn off the camera and remove any optional memory card.
2.
Hold the ON/OFF switch in the ON position until the HP logo displays and then disappears.
3.
The camera is now reset. When the camera is turned back on it should prompt for the date and time.
2.
If the camera does not display an error after the reset and appears to be functioning properly, it is imperative to check and update the firmware. The firmware update corrects the lens positioning issue that can cause E104, E105, and E106 errors with the camera.
Determine if an update is needed by following the steps below to check the current version of the firmware on the camera:
1.
Before turning the camera on, press and hold the Flash button.
2.
While the Flash button is depressed, turn on the camera. A Service Screen displays.
3.
Located at the bottom of the screen is an entry, F/W.
4.
If the version of the firmware is lower than 1.12, then the firmware update is required and should be performed immediately. See the HP document Recommended Firmware Updates for Photosmart 733 and 735 Digital Cameras .

If the camera still displays an error after performing the power reset, click contact HP for servicing. But since this camera is 4 years old, and as such, out of warranty, it may cost more to repair than it is really worth. The rule of thumb is that if the estimate for repair is north of 50% what you paid for it, you're better off taking that money and buying a newer and upgraded model.
