I'm getting Error 106 on my 735. Is there anything I can do, or do I have to take it somewhere to get fixed?

I have had this camera a couple of years, so there will be no warranty. It was not dropped or anything like that, I just took it out of its case one day and it wouldn't work. It comes on for a second, and then displays the error code (e106) and quickly shuts off. I found an answer somewhere on google that said to turn it on while holding down the flash button, but not what to do from there.

Hi Beth,
Error 106 for HP is similar to the E18 error that shows up in Canons in that it's an internal lens mechanism problem (usually anyhow). Thanks for all the info you gave in your question, as our first reply is always to get it checked out by HP so that you don't void your warranty by tinkering with it. Now we know you don't have that to worry about, so let's move on. =)

First of all, I have heard that there is a firmware update for the camera that supposedly fixes this problem. I think that is what they were getting at with the "hold down the flash and turn on" instructions, as that is the first step in checking to see if you need this update. Here is the link to the firmware- it's only for Windows I think, so hopefully you're not running a Mac.

What you want is the Version 1.12, which is linked next to the section that says "resolves a lens positioning problem." The info above that is on checking to see if you need the update; once you've done that click on the link for firmware 1.12. Read all instructions carefully on that page, download and let us know if that helps.

Thanks Brenda, you were very helpful. My camera has the Version 1.12, so that's not the problem. I guess I'll have to get it serviced...I tried a few other things that the HP site recommended and they didn't work either. :( But I really appreciate your help.

Hi Beth,
I have heard that getting this fixed can be around $110... you should definitely call for service and see what they quote you, but depending on whether or not the camera is worth it to you you may want to look into buying a new one if the cost is pretty high. Something to keep in mind.

If you are really adventurous (and if the camera is a write-off anyhow), here is a website explaining how one user took apart an HP camera to solve this error code. It's a different model than yours but I'm willing to bet the issue is the same. It's an interesting read even if you don't feel like gutting your camera.
