This usually isn't a good situation- I would call Kodak and see what they're charging for repairs. The Kodak digitals are somewhat notorious for this sometimes... just like the Canons have Error 18. Is the lens sticking in any way? I have heard (although I don't 'necessarily' recommend it) that people have fixed this by 1. hitting the bottom of the camera against the hand, rather hard; or 2. grabbing the lens and pulling on it while the camera is off, then turning it back on.

do we know what causes the lens to stick? I just did the same, pulled on the lens a bit, hit it against my hand (that's aweseome technical advice btw) and it works, but this can't be the real answer to this problem!

Felicity, supposedly it is a very small gear that gets easily knocked out of position, and the whacking/ pulling pops it back into place. I know, a very technical explanation, right? =) I have also heard that sometimes the lens retraction mechanism can get knocked out of place, which is what causes it to continuously pull in, then out again. Basically it's about very tiny parts not staying where they should, or so I've heard.

Well, my daughter's camera is still working and it's now May, so I am keeping a good thought.
for her birthday I purchased her a Canon camcorder, so I hope we have better luck with this brand. But thank you for your insight. It's just frustrating when you buy something and need servicing on it constantly.

I'm not sure what the jargon is, but basically it's related to "initial error 15," which is the lens error. Sounds like something in there moved around, but didn't fix itself yet.

Got a bit of salt water in mine. OK, yes - very bad move!
I think the lense is sticking because salt crystals have formed in the mechanism (not going to shift with tapping/thumping etc). I'm about to do surgery on it to clean it and get it moving again. Any advice on dismantling a compact digital camera greatly appreciated! Anyone else had saltwater in there... or is it just me?

Duncan, you sound adventurous. Good luck with this endeavor. I haven't personally pulled apart an Easyshare, but surprisingly I did find someone else with the saltwater issue. Granted, it's a lens not a camera, but still- their suggestion of using alcohol was interesting. Here's the link.

Yes, for adventurous read stupid! I have a waterproof camera bag but didn't use it that day. Thought - cheap camera, would risk it.
Thanks for the link, that's interesting. I have taken the camera apart, and it was still running until I seperated one of the circuit boards. To get at the lense is very hard, it's basicaly the first thing put into the assembly, so the last you can get out. A friend suggested if I could get at it I could soak it in freshwater to dissolve the water crystals as a last resort, but this is virtually impossible. If I can get it running again I may try to do that. Probably a lost cause though. If it had been a dip in freshwater I think it would be OK. My advice - keep this camera out of the water, and especially the lense out of salt water!

thank for the advice guys! i thought that i got the camera wet at one point or another and i didn't understand why i was getting lens error 12 and 22 out of no where. but now i know it just got stuck. i hurt my hand a little bit haha but i picked at the lens a little and it turned it on and it worked! next time i wont hit it off my hand ;) it still gets stuck occasionally, but until I buy another, it will work!

oh and sometimes the little doors to the lens don't open...but i just push them open then. i don't think there is any way of fixing that...oh well, it works for me

Don't clean salt with alcohol, use plain water - takig it apart isn't hard just don't lose any of the small screws and stuff but I don't think you can get into the lens mechanism anyway - BTW WATCH OUT FOR THE CAPACITOR FOR THE FLASH (LOOKS LIKE A TRIPLE-A BATTERY - IT'S GOT LIKE 500 VOLTS WHEN THE CAMERA IS ON - IT'S INSULATED BUT SALT WATER CONDUCTS AND IT WOULD REALLY RUIN YOUR DAY TO GET ZAPPED)

Banging this one didn't fix it, neither did using a battery to run the lens closed (I was a bench tech in a former life...), so I'm going to try to dig in deeper and see if I can find the problem...

Yeah so lens error 12 and lens error 22 and the lens was stuck out, and I tried banging and pulling and what not a couple months ago, nothing. Just tried again today, and let me tell you I was really reefing on it twisting the lens, popping it in and out banging on it really hard. There were a couple points when it wouldn't even give me an error, the light would just flash red, but I kept at it then all of a sudden it works! So brutal and lame as it stopped working as I was taking a picture and just hitting it works.
Well when you've got nothing to lose, I guess go all out!

i found it easier after banging my hand raw, that if you take the batteries out and hit it on the floor {not too hard, or use a rubber mallet} that it will work too. Also try hitting the lens {around the lens} and then using the mallet, instructions and it will work too. Mine did [along with prayer}.

My advice...DO NOT BUY CAMERAS FROM KODAK! These cameras absolutely are the worst I have ever seen. If you have to abuse a camera to get it to work then how can it be a good product? What a total rip off!!! My daughter has the M853 that she just got for Easter this year. Two weeks ago she started having the same lens problem. We found out Kodak would fix it for almost half of the purchase price, but why bother? So...she followed the "banging" advice above and it worked a couple more times until it started again. She banged it some more and now it is worthless!!! We even bought the extended warranty but Kodak will not honor it! (Before the banging began) and I will never ever purchase another kodak product at all...absolutely nothing associated with the company either! This is the biggest rip off I've ever seen!!!

Have you tried decent batteries, i find Duracell ones work in mine, it struggles with cheaper ones.
Best thing you can do is tell your mum while showing her this web site, If she reads through a few of these posts she will realise how crap these cameras are, hopefully yours is still under warranty, but to be honest Kodak back up ain't the best and they will do anything to wriggle out of repairing or replacing the camera free of charge. The costs of repairs are to be honest ...a joke, you may as well buy another camera, the repair cost is about the same price as the camera. sorry I don't have any better news. what I have I have learnt from this camera is, not to rush in, and check any cameras out on the internet before parting with any money.
Hope your mum ain't too hard on you. Best of luck.

Well, I don't get any error message. The camera was not dropped or exposed to water. I can pull the lens apart, but no luck. My camera is 18 months old and repair will be $90. I tried the banging against my palm (ouch!) and that didn't work either. I have all my photos on the Kodak Easy Share system on my computer. I don't know what to do. Preface: I DO NOT SUGGEST YOU CRAM THE LENS BACK IN, I'm just saying--it worked for me.

O.k. I just got my Kodak CD33 working again. Yesterday I turned it on to take pictures at a birthday party and the lens came out like normal but wouldn't focus or respond in anyway except when I tried to turn it off. It was stuck with the lens out and when I turned it off it gave Lens Error: 22 and would just turn off (not retracting the lens). I turned it back on and it gave me Lens Error: 12 and then did nothing except when I turned it back off it gave me Lens Error: 22 again. Same thing everytime, turning it on = Lens Error 12 & turning it off = Lens Errror: 22. Exasperated because the advice of tapping or hitting the bottom of the camera didn't work for me I just crammed the lens back in with the palm of my hand. It went in. So I tried turning it on and the lens came out about 1/10 of the way and then I got a new error code, I got Error Code 14. I was thinking "CRAP". So I turned it off, and tried again. I turned it on and it the lens came all the way out like normal, the live screen appeared, no error codes--it appears to be working. ((SO FAR)). I am not counting on this camera to last me much longer though. As I dropped it on a sidewalk 3 weeks ago and it only messed up on me yesterday. Somewhere down the line it's gonna mess up again. But for now--IT WORKS :)

I IN NO WAY AM SUGGESTING YOU DO SOMETHING THAT WILL DAMAGE YOUR CAMERA EVEN MORE, LIKE CRAMMING THE LENS BACK IN--I'm just saying it worked for me.

rar! Oh my gosh, I was getting lens error 22, consistantly. then I read this and I thought "well, it didn't work when I hit it before, but now that a ton of people told me to do it, maybe it will work," which was terrible logic, but I gave it a try anyway. And it still doesn't work. Plus, now it's saying lens error 12 and then changing its mind to say lens error 22. And my hand hurts, really badly. Oh well, I'll keep trying and I'll let everyone know if it works. I was going to get a new camera for Christmas anyway, because I hate this one, but it was better than nothing. Now it is nothing...

THIS IS FOR ERRORS 12 AND 22. okay, so i had lens errors 12 and 22, so instead of the lens being stuck inside, it was the opposite, it was stuck out and wouldnt come back in. so after reading this i tried banging on it a bit but to no avail. so as i turned it on and it gave me the error message i switched the dial to off and i pressed on the lens so that it went in, only very very very slightly though. then i turned it back on and banged it on the bottom underneath the lens and it works like normal again! so yeah try that but dont press on the lens too hard.

Sometimes a tiny bit of grit gets in the works that stalls a gear or causes friction between moving parts. I fixed an EasyShare C913 where the zoom would not work. With the camera on and lens extended, I put a little pressure on the lens while operating the zoom lever. I heard a little gritty sound and the zoom started working again. Good as new!
