Well, I'd recommend using a Card Reader and placing your memory card into it. Then all you need to do is insert the SD card (your PC will recognize it as another drive), and then simply drag and drop wherever you want. Or, you can simply connect the USB cable to the camera and then use something like Picasa 2 by Google to transfer and organize your pictures. It's free.

I'll second James on using a Card Reader instead of the USB cable direct hookup from camera to computer. We've heard too many horror stories and difficulties with direct USB hookups. The card readers are cheap at $10-20 (or less on sale) and combined with Picasa3 software free from Google your transfers will be smooth and trouble free. Plus Picasa3 will keep your pics organized, correct red eye, adjust exposures, crop images...... It is great (though not a professional level software like Photoshop) for routine use. Picasa3 has added a photo-stitch option which is useful since very few of the P&S cameras have wide angle lenses.
So buy the card reader, put the memory card in it and then plug it into the USB port. Download Picasa3 and when installed click on IMPORT button near the upper left hand corner and you are ready to go.
