my C663 deletes pictures randomly from the memory card

We have a Kodak Easy Share camera and have used a couple different memory cards (one Kodak and two Simple Tech memory cards). The camera randomly deletes pictures off of the memory cards. We can take pictures and they are on the memory card when we hit review but when we go back to the camera some of the pictures are deleted off of the memory card - some state "unrecognizable file format" and some pictures are only half there. What can be done?

Kodak's do have a habit of intermittently being unable to read files. But that's an issue pertaining to the camera and if you take the card out and use a USB memory card reader plugged into your PC, you find that you still have the images, the camera was just unable to read them for whatever reason. I've even had one where one minute it couldn't read it, the next it could. But randomly deleting images? That's a new one.

My recommendation is to reset the camera, get all the images you can off the card with that USB card reader and then use a file recovery utility (F-Recovery is a good one) to get the ones that were deleted. Then, completely reformat the card.

Thanks for your input James
I have tried to read the memory cards using my computer and the images have been erased, are just partial images or unreadable just as they are on the camera. I have tried to use a recovery program for the memory card but it didn't bring back any images. I have formatted the memory cards on the camera to try to get a fresh start but that still doesn't solve the problem.
How does a person reset the camera?
Are there any other suggestions for this problem?

From your descriptions, it would appear that you have bad sectors in the card.
Bad sectors cannot be solved by Formatting the card. see this forum

One of the ways out will be to try using a new memory card.

I have used 3 different memory cards and each card has had the same thing happen. The camera takes great pictures and using the internal memory works fine. But if I want to take the camera on a trip that's not many pictures that can be taken.

Well, if resetting the camera and updating the firmware isn't working, and if the problem persists over several different memory cards, then a repair is probably your only viable option. But understand that without warranty coverage the average cost of a camera repair is around $180. As such, it may cost more to repair than it is really worth. The rule of thumb is that if the estimate for repair is north of 50% what you paid for it, you're better off taking that money and buying a newer and upgraded model.

And Bukit has a point. With cards getting this cheap, it makes since to get your pictures off them once they start developing bad sectors, and just toss it in favor of a newer card.

I belief cameras don't erase pictures randomly. Even in cases where a user wants to delete a picture, the camera will double check whether to proceed with deletion.

Memory cards, however, do give problems once in a while, less frequent for established brands like Sandisk, Kingston or some popular brands, more for other makes.
This observation, however, does not cover fake Sandisks sold in the market.

I am focusing on the memory card because your problem only appears randomly, indicating while the camera is working, sometimes the card does not record the pictures properly.

I appreciate everyone's input.
I have tried SimpleTech SD cards and Kodak SD cards and it happens to both brands.
There doesn't appear to be a firmware update and I am unable to locate a reset on the camera.
I have talked with another camera tech and he advised that it could be something in the writing process in the camera. It is not under warranty and the cost is more than 50percent therefore I believe the camera is a lemon and not worth sending in to be fixed. I will try another brand of memory card and check the Kodak site again to find the reset for the camera.

One thing you may try is asking Kodak for an RMA return. Explain to them you believe it's a writing error in the camera itself and ask that they return it and replace it with a better model. What can they say, no?
